Backstage at the Allstate Arena, but not in a locker room, we find newly signed XIX wrestler Gianna Rojas. She’s ready for her upcoming match, wearing brand new gear in dark colors that compliment her sleek form, her hair pulled back with small braids at the temples leaving the rest, just below jaw length, to swing free. There’s a certain alertness to her that’s just this side of tense, but her smile makes those full lips quirk before they part and let that lightly accented voice of hers spill out.
Gianna Rojas: There was a time that I couldn’t picture myself here. I don’t just mean here at this place, but here, getting my thoughts together before going out in front of the fans and putting on the best match I possibly could, no matter who I was facing. Because you know, way back then, it didn’t matter to me who I wrestled, just that I was wrestling. Most people here tonight probably don’t even remember that company, despite some of the many names that got their jumping off point from there. But eso ya no me pesa.
She takes a breath, letting it fill her lungs before she looks up, those warm dark eyes glimmering behind those lush lashes.
Gianna Rojas: So much has changed, that it all feels brand new again. I know I’m not that same bright eyed chica de ensueño adolescente, little teenage dream girl I was back then. I’ve grown, and learned a lot of hard lessons since then. Somewhere along the way though, I found that fire again. That hunger, that need to see if I could do this again, to perform at that level I had before, and maybe even surpass that. So, I started that climb, that uphill path to train again, to knock off the rust, whatever you want to call it.
A warmer smile then, as she reaches to pluck at a black armband she’s got tied around her upper arm, a logo embroidered on it.
Gianna Rojas: The best part of this whole process was finding that courage again, reaching out to people that not only helped me, but made me better in the process. I can’t thank Sid St. Hughes enough for all he’s done, to encourage and support me and get me here tonight. I can’t predict how this match with Lil Juicy is going to go, but what I can promise is that I’m going to put everything I’ve got in it. I’ve been a champion in the past, but the only way I’m going to reach those heights again is to put myself out there and try. To give my best effort, to show you all the fire in my heart. That pasión y deseo I have for this.
She pushes away from the wall she’s been leaning on, turning to walk down towards the gorilla position, a sway to her hips as she moves that’s graceful while her step is light, almost like she’s dancing.
Gianna Rojas: The last time I walked in a place like this, I was a champion. I know, in my heart, that I will be again… and that path starts here.
