“Corinthians 9:24-27.” says the Reverend Martin West. We find him seated alone on a set if stairs in the backstage area. It’s an area isolated enough that no one is bothering the good Reverend for smoking a cigarette indoors. His jacket is on a hanger on the rails of the stairs and his sleeves area already rolled up and his hands wrapped for a fight.
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” Martin says, quoting those Bible passages from memory, though his own copy of the text is sitting beside him. There is a pause, the camera pulls out to show that Pastor Dante Davis is standing further up the staircase behind The Reverend.
“What meaning do you take from that, Pastor?” Martin asks, taking a last drag from his cigarette before flicking it across the room.
“That winning takes work and discipline.” Pastor Davis says. Martin tilts his head as if to say ‘not bad’.
“A little simplified but that’s about the gist of it, Pastor. Well done.” The Reverend says. Pastor Davis looks pleased with himself.
“Thank you, Reverend West.”
“When I laid out Jessi Ozborne at the end of the last show… I wanted to see the reaction. To see the measure of our Darkhorse Champion and I have been left… wanting. See I’ve been around for some time…saying little but when push comes to shove folks get knocked out. I did not call any particular champions out….just took my wins and kept plowing along until it became undeniable that I deserved my shot. The very definition of a Dark Horse. Meanwhile Jessi… to quote the Bard; Full of Sound and Fury, signifying nothing. So much talk and so little substance, apparently Jessi hopes she can keep herself afloat at the top by filling a balloon with hot air… but in the same place where Jessi became champion the tale of Jessi Ozborne as Darkhorse Champion shall come to a close.” Martin says. He stands and removes his jacket from the hanger and begins putting it on.
“Pastor those verses I mentioned before… You had the general idea but moreso it means that the path to victory begins with a fight with oneself and… oh Martin and I have had us some fights. There has been night after night of arguments, doubts, and while Jessi publicly declares her doubts about her place in this industry….I have had my Faith tested and have come back stronger. The Fist of The Lord. And when I raise the Dark Horse Championship up to HIm to show Him the work I have done in His name I’m guessing that many of you will see the light. I have made no attempt to convert any of you… but I’m guessing by the end of tonight that many of you will begin to understand.” Martin says. He adjusts his clerical collar a bit.
“Pastor… it’s time to spread the good word.” Reverend West says as he steps off of the stairs and offscreen, Pastor Davis following after him.
